Save Time and Money: Make OCLC Cataloging Partners Part of Your Workflow

What is your turnaround time for getting your library materials on the shelf and accessible to your patrons? Do you wish you had more time to spend on special projects? Come and find out how other libraries have automated part of their cataloging using OCLC WorldCat Cataloging Partners, a service that works with your library materials vendors (including Amazon) to deliver full MARC records for each title your library purchases. The panelists will discuss which materials vendors they use, how the automated process works, and how their library staff and library patrons have benefited. – Sara Ring, Coordinator, Bibliographic and Technical Services Unit, MINITEX, James Rentz and Sarah Waletzki, Rochester Public Library; Erica Nutzman, Minnesota School of Business, and another panelist TBA

Time & Date of presentation: 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Friday, 26 October

ELM Database Specifics: Unique Functionality

The ELM databases offer many tools and functions that the average person is unaware of. In this session, staff from MINITEX Reference Services will highlight useful tools offered by EBSCO, NetLibrary, Gale, and ProQuest via the databases. Page Composer, in EBSCO resources, allows you to create, edit, and share web pages. ProQuest offers a function similar to Page Composer and also allows you to create a bibliography with your search results. NetLibrary offers the capability to search within the text of ebooks, bookmark pages, and create notes. Gale is now offering the capability to search most of their databases through one interface called PowerSearch. – Beth Staats, Jennifer Hootman, Kristen Mastel, Reference Librarians, MINITEX Reference Services

Poster Session – 12 – 6pm Wednesday 24 October

Building a Library to Enhance the Livelihood of Tsunami Survivors –

The Tsunami of December 2004 was one of the worst natural disasters in modern day history. Lives and communities were washed away instantly. Immediately, a librarian named Lillemar Nevanka Goonewardena, along with the Minnesota-Sri Lanka Friendship Foundation (MNSLFF), helped to create a model library/technology center in hopes of enriching the lives of tsunami survivors in a village in Sri Lanka. This poster will discuss the building of the library/technology center in Sri Lanka with the help of donors and librarians in both Minnesota and Sri Lanka and the various uses in digital technology that made it all happen.- Lillemar Nevanka Goonewardena, Metro State University and Globe University / Melissa Aho, Bio-Medical Library, University of Minnesota
